Shut the door, take a seat
It’s that time of year again; when players’ contracts expire. At least for the majority of clubs in Europe the end of season triggers the often uncomfortable discussions with players and their representatives, where the ultimate outcome is either renew or release.
Ideally we would have made inroads into this process earlier in the campaign to avoid such a crescendo, although in reality we know it’s not always possible. So now comes the time when we need to make the all-important calls about who stays and who goes.
During the course of the season, we have suggested ways in which we can make these conversations and decisions more objective and unbiased, including:
These are great tools to have not only in helping to make our decision, but also then explaining the reasons why to the player. Non-quantitative information naturally plays a major role as well, as often some of the most important contributions are the hardest to measure.
It might not make the conversation any easier, but making data the centrepiece of the discussion will make it fairer and also ensure that you’re making the right decision.
